The Mprize, introduced in 2003, is designed to directly accelerate the development of revolutionary new life extension therapies. The prize pot continues to grow through donations; awards are made whenever a research team extends the life of mice. There are two categories of cash prizes:
The exact amount of the prize depends on how long the mice live. The prize makes it possible to attract notable scientists from major universities like Dr. Andrzej Bartke, Southern Illinois University, who headed the team that holds the prize for longevity and Dr. Stephen Spindler, University of California, the prize holder for rejuvenation. In 2009 the first Special Mprize Lifespan Achievement Award went to Dr. Z. Dave Sharp for the successful healthy life extension of already aged mice using a pharmaceutical, rapamycin. April 2010 marks the start of a new prize; created to speed up the work in regenerative medicine that will allow human organs to be created from a patient's own cells. The NewOrgan Prize will be given for successfully constructing a whole new organ – heart, kidney, lung, pancreas or liver - from a patient's own cells. The organ must be transplanted and have functioned properly for two years in order for the award to be granted. The dollar amount of the prize will grow with donations from the general public. Meet the Competitors (coming soon) Competition Rules and Application (coming soon) NewOrgan Network has been added as part of Methuselah Foundation My Bridge 4 Life. If you need a new organ, this is a special community for you. We encourage you to register, whether or not you are currently eligible for a transplant. |

The Mprize springs from a simple truth: the greatest innovations in human history have always been fueled by three things ... competition, imagination, and the entrepreneurial spirit. The Mprize is a breakthrough approach that gives visionary competitors the resources they need to solve one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time. Meet the brilliant minds who are redefining the way we view aging. |
Competitor Bruce TeterIn the study by Stephen Spindler at UC Riverside, testing two doses of curcumin in the Longvida formulation, the mice are still surviving at about 80%, so it is too early to tell compared to untreated mice, and although calorie restricted (CR) mice are 90-95% surviving at this age, it is too early to tell if curcumin is different than CR. It will be several months before enough mice have died (usually at the point of 50% mortality in untreated, control mice). For the NIA ITP study of pure curcumin, it will be about 2 months before 50% mortality in the control mice, at which point the analysis of median life span extension will be made. |
